What you resist, persists

What you resist, persists

This phrase is spot-on when talking about those troublesome negative emotions we all experience from time-to-time. You know, the ones like self-doubt, fear, anger, sadness, or anxiety that you’d rather ignore than deal with. But here’s the thing – the more you try to avoid them, the louder they yell.

Think of negative feelings like one of your car’s engine warning lights. When it flashes on, it’s trying to tell you something’s not quite right under the bonnet. Ignore it, and the problem gets worse. Just like that light, your emotions are trying to tell you something’s up and needs your attention.

We sometimes fool ourselves into thinking these feelings will just magically disappear if we simply ignore them. But our unconscious minds don’t work like that. All feelings, even the unpleasant ones, have a purpose. They’re like life’s GPS, guiding us away from the bad stuff and towards the good. Ignore them, and you’re driving blind.

Dodging negative emotions is like running on a treadmill – it can take lots of effort, but you’re not actually going anywhere. In fact, it could even make things worse. Unchecked feelings don’t just go away; they sneak back in and can make us feel stressed or even physically unwell.

On the other hand, facing these feelings head-on helps us move forward address the issues that are being highlighted and starts the healing process.

So, what do we do about them? First, admit these feelings are there and let yourself feel them. It’s perfectly okay to have these feelings, really. Lastly, try to figure out what they’re trying to tell you. What’s causing these feelings and how can you fix it?

Getting through these feelings isn’t about pushing them away, it’s about listening and understanding. It’s very important to understand that it’s okay to feel bad sometimes, as long as we use it as a chance to learn and grow. After all, these feelings are just trying to look out for us.

Sometimes, of course, prolonged negative feelings can be due to unconscious programming that you’ve taken on at a very young age. This can be hard to deal with by yourself and is something that I specialise in. So if this is a problem for you, let’s chat.
