This common saying is more than a catchy saying; it’s actually based on how our brains work. In this post I’ll explain why.
Actions take more brain power than words. For example, saying you’ll do something is one thing, but actually getting up and doing it requires more thought and effort. Our brains get this, and that’s why we value actions more.
Plus, actions are more trustworthy than words. It’s easy to say something and not mean it, but actions are harder to fake. This ties into what psychologists call non-verbal communication. It’s all about how what we do often shows our true feelings better than what we say.
Do you ever felt uncomfortable when someone’s words don’t seem to match their actions? That’s something called cognitive dissonance at work, which is technical way of saying that when our beliefs or behaviours don’t line up, it can make us feel uneasy.
Think about someone who says they love the environment but keeps dropping litter. They might start to feel a bit weird because their actions (littering) don’t match up with their words (loving the environment). To stop feeling this way, they might start picking up their litter or stop saying they care about the environment.
So, in a nutshell, “actions speak louder than words” because they take more effort, are harder to fake, and if they don’t match with what we say, our brains pick up on that. Remember, while words can tell a story, it’s our actions that really show who we are and what we mean.
