Why successful people sometimes suffer from self-doubt – Part 2

Why successful people sometimes suffer from self-doubt - Part 2

Career progression is often seen as a linear path to increased confidence and authority. However, as one climbs the corporate ladder, it can paradoxically lead to an increase in self-doubt. This phenomenon, while seemingly counterintuitive, can be understood by examining the changing dynamics and responsibilities that come with career advancement.

In the early stages of a career, your responsibilities are typically more defined and limited. You’re primarily answerable to your immediate supervisor, and your performance is evaluated based on specific tasks and goals. However, as you progress and take on leadership roles, the dynamics change significantly.

Suddenly, you’re not just answerable to your superiors, but also to a team that looks to you for guidance and leadership. Your effectiveness and capability are constantly being evaluated, not just by one person, but by everyone you work with. Junior staff members may compare notes on your performance, adding another layer of scrutiny.

Moreover, as you move up the ranks, you’re likely to be involved in larger, more consequential projects and deals. These high-stake situations can open you up to the possibility of bigger failures. Mistakes, which are inevitable, can be magnified, and the consequences of things going wrong can be far more serious and visible.

This heightened pressure and potential for public failure can exacerbate self-doubt. It’s a heavy load to carry, and it can be even more challenging if you’re wrestling with limiting beliefs that you’ve internalized since childhood. These deep-seated beliefs can undermine your confidence and self-belief, making the journey up the corporate ladder feel like an uphill battle.

In such situations, seeking support from an experienced mindset coach can be invaluable. A coach can provide an objective perspective, help you identify and challenge limiting beliefs, and equip you with strategies to manage self-doubt. They can also provide tools to build resilience, so you can navigate the challenges of career progression with confidence and grace.

As a very experienced mindset coach I often help people quickly let go of their self-doubt. If this is something that you would like some help with, we should chat.
