The Hidden Impact of Self-Doubt on Your Career Progression

The Hidden Impact of Self-Doubt on Your Career Progression

Self-doubt can be a hidden roadblock in your career path. It’s often a quiet voice that makes you question if you’re good enough.

So, just how can it affect your career progression?

Firstly, self-doubt can make you think you’re not as capable as you are, leading to something called Impostor Syndrome. You might start to feel like you’re faking it and don’t belong in your job. This can stress you out and can even make you perform poorly at work, which isn’t great for career advancement.

Secondly, it can make it hard to communicate your thoughts and ideas at work. If you’re always second-guessing yourself, you might hold back in meetings or not share your thoughts at all. This means people might not see your full potential, and it can slow down your progress.

Next, it can keep you stuck in your comfort zone. This is a place where you feel safe and secure, but you’re not challenging yourself or learning new things. The problem is that growth and learning are essential for moving up in your career.

It can also make networking tough. Networking is all about making connections with other people in your field, but self-doubt can make you feel like you’re not on the same level as them. This can stop you from reaching out and forming relationships that could help you in your career.

Lastly, it’s important to know that self-doubt can often come from things that happened in our childhood. Maybe someone said something negative to you, and it stuck in the back of your mind. Even if you don’t realize it, these past experiences can make you doubt yourself today. If you feel like this might be the case for you, talking to a professional could be really helpful.

However, it’s also good to also remember that a little bit of self-doubt isn’t a bad thing. It can keep us grounded and encourage us to do our best. The key is not to let it stop you from doing your job well and reaching for new opportunities.

It can be hard to overcome self-doubt arising from unconscious issues, because they are buried in your unconscious mind.

This is an area that I specialise in so, if self-doubt is a problem for you, we should chat.
