Where has my willpower gone?

Where has my willpower gone?

Are you feeling burnt out, unmotivated, and struggling to make even the simplest of decisions? Well, don’t worry, you’re not alone. We all experience moments where our willpower just seems to disappear. But what causes this loss of willpower and what can we do about it? Let’s dive in and find out.

So, what is willpower? It’s the inner drive that helps us achieve the goals that we set for ourselves. As such, it is our ability to resist short-term temptations in order to achieve our goals. It’s what helps us to say no to that extra slice of pizza or to push through a difficult workout. However, willpower is not an infinite resource. Just like a muscle, it can become fatigued and exhausted, leading to a phenomenon known as ego depletion.

Ego depletion is the idea that our ability to exercise self-control or willpower is limited and can be used up. So when we’re faced with too many decisions or challenges that require a lot of willpower, we become mentally exhausted and have less willpower to use for future tasks.

So what can we do about this? Well, the good news is that there are several strategies we can use to help conserve our willpower and prevent ego depletion.

  • Plan ahead: By planning our day and week ahead of time, we can reduce decision fatigue and avoid making too many choices that require a lot of willpower. For example, plan your meals for the week, lay out your clothes the night before, and prioritize your to-do list.
  • Take breaks: Taking short breaks throughout the day can help refresh our mental resources and prevent burnout. Even just taking a 10-minute walk outside or doing some deep breathing exercises can help boost our energy and willpower.
  • Build habits: Habits are behaviours that become automatic, requiring little to no willpower to execute. By building healthy habits, we can conserve our willpower for other tasks. For example, make a habit of going to the gym at the same time each day or always meditating for a few minutes before bed.
  • Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can have a significant impact on our willpower and decision-making abilities. So, make sure to prioritize getting enough quality sleep each night to help conserve your mental energy.
  • Reduce stress: Chronic stress can also deplete our willpower and mental resources. So finding ways to manage stress, such as through exercise, meditation, or talking to a friend, can help preserve our willpower.
  • Avoid demanding tasks or decisions if you are unwell: it will willpower will be depleted if you are unwell and so don’t make unrealistic demands of it at such times.

To summarise, we all experience moments of low willpower, but by understanding ego depletion and taking steps to conserve our mental resources, we can prevent burnout and stay on track towards our long-term goals. So go ahead, try implementing some of these strategies into your daily routine, and see the positive impact it can have on your life!
